The incremental approach to an EMR allows the practice to choose the configuration that best suits their immediate needs. Practice Partner Foundation offers three different options, each of which allows a practice to lay the groundwork for an EMR:

Transcription

This option is well-suited for offices currently using transcription for clinical documentation. It involves the easy formatting of transcribed notes so they can be downloadedinto the EMR when the practice is ready. Storing transcription in an EMR-friendly way allows a clinic to establish the basis of a complete electronic medical record with only a minor modification of its daily activities. When the EMR project is ready to go live, the stored information can be downloaded, and the practice will be up and running with a significant amount of clinical data already in place.

Medication Management

This option is a partial implementation of the EMR, focusing on prescription writing and medication management. The cost of implementing the prescription module is much lower than a full EMR and it allows the providers to adjust to the task of electronic prescription writing. In addition, an office performing this task within the context of an incrementally implemented electronic medical record is building a foundation for the complete EMR.

Clinical Repository

A clinical repository provides universal and simultaneous access to charts from any workstation without implementing a full EMR. The repository option allows storage of charts on a network of workstations giving providers and staff online access to progress notes and other transcribed data from any workstation. This results in fewer chart pulls, higher staff efficiency and access to the electronic charts from home or off-site. In addition, a solid foundation of clinical data is being created to facilitate a smooth transition to a full EMR when that time comes.
