Practice Partner Research Network

The Practice Partner Research Network (PPRNet) is a unique concept in the field of practice-based research. PPRNet is the first and only research network connecting practicing physicians through the use of an EMR (electronic medical record) system. Although practice-based research networks have been in existence for many years as a means of facilitating collaborative research among family physicians, PPRNet is unique in that all of its members use an EMR system (Practice Partner Patient Records) to capture their patient information.

History

Founded in May 1995, PPRNet is a joint venture between the Department of Family Medicine and the Center for Health Care Research at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and Practice Partner. MUSC is primarily responsible for the management of the network, and together with the PPRNet advisory board, designs and initiates research projects. Practice Partner is responsible for the collection and storage of data provided by participating physicians. Since 1995, PPRNet's longitudinal patient database has increased to include over 500 physicians from more than 100 practices. The PPRNet database currently has more than 4 million patient visits from more than 380,000 patients.
